On Friday, March 19, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Brendan Aloysius Barry, a Florida Bar Board Certified real estate attorney practicing in Shutts & Bowen’s Fort Lauderdale office, to the Board of Pilot Commissioners. His appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
In Gov. DeSantis’ letter to Brendan announcing his appointment, he stated: “One of my greatest and proudest responsibilities is the appointment of qualified and ethical individuals to boards and commissions throughout the state. Your appointment is evidence of my utmost confidence in your ability to serve with excellence and distinction.”
The Board of Pilot Commissioners regulates Florida’s harbor pilots, considers applications for licensure, reviews disciplinary cases, and conducts related hearings. It also engages in rulemaking to implement the provisions set forth in Florida Statutes and conducts other business related to harbor pilots across Florida’s seaports.
“It’s an honor to be appointed by Governor DeSantis to the Board of Pilot Commissioners,” stated Brendan. “I understand the importance harbor pilots play in preserving, protecting and enhancing Florida’s fragile marine ecosystem while helping deliver the goods and experiences our community demands, and I believe my understanding of Florida’s seaports and our environment will bring a unique perspective to the Board.”
The Department of Business and Professional Regulation supports the Governor in meeting his obligation to appoint qualified, representative and appropriate people to the important leadership roles within the department’s Professional Boards, Council and Commissions. The Board of Pilot Commissioners members work with the department in meeting its mission to “License Efficiently. Regulate Fairly.”
Brendan serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Port Everglades Association and Fish Florida and has held several appointed positions for Broward County Public Schools. He was also previously appointed by the Unites States Secretary of the Interior to serve on Big Cypress National Preserve’s Off-Road Vehicle Advisory Committee. Through these involvements, Brendan has demonstrated his passion for the marine environment and his ability to help balance the demands of our citizens, businesses and visitors against Florida’s fragile and valuable environment.
