MIAMI -- February 2, 2016 -- Former City of Miami Commissioner and Miami Commission Chairman Marc D. Sarnoff has joined Shutts & Bowen LLP. He will be a Partner in the Government Law and Land Use Practice Groups in the firm’s Miami office.

Mr. Sarnoff served the city for nine years until November 2015, representing City of Miami residents from Coconut Grove, Brickell, Downtown, Edgewater, Biscayne Boulevard, and Morningside. He served as Chairman of the City Commission, the Downtown Development Authority and the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency. During Mr. Sarnoff’s tenure, Miami witnessed hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment in the city, booming tourism and greatly expanded cultural opportunities.

As commissioner, he advocated for business investment and Miami’s emergence as a technology hub for entrepreneurs and investors, an entertainment center with the new EUE Screen Gems film studio, and as a money center for hedge funds and other financial services. During his tenure, the downtown area matured as a cultural center, with the creation of the Perez Art Museum, the soon-to-open Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, the centerpiece 30-acre Museum Park, and the development of the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center.

Among many other achievements, Mr. Sarnoff effectively championed access to parks, public safety and improved services. During his service, the City of Miami invested $70.9 million in repaving and drainage improvement, and $62.5 million in District 2 parks, adding 20 acres of urban parks, and reclaimed 40 acres of under-used parks. During his tenure, police protection in his district and in the city increased dramatically.

“I’m certain Marc’s extensive land use planning and zoning expertise and his state-wide governmental contacts will greatly benefit our clients,” said Bowman Brown, chairman of Shutts & Bowen’s Executive Committee. “He helped guide the City of Miami through a transformative time, and we share his confidence in our region’s future. We are delighted to have him on board.”

“It’s exciting to be with such a dynamic, forward-looking firm with deep roots in Miami and South Florida,” Mr. Sarnoff said. “ I look forward to making the most of this opportunity and to continue to make a positive difference in our greater community.”

Mr. Sarnoff is "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in the United States. He is also a Florida Supreme Court Certified Circuit Civil Mediator since 2005. He received his J.D. from Loyola University School of Law, his L.L.M. in Admiralty from Tulane Law School, and his B.S. from the University of Tampa.
