Shutts & Bowen negotiated the complex $35 million contract that will provide two mobile gas power turbines to the hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.

“This is an immediate solution to a very serious problem,” said Ed Patricoff. The Palo Seco plant is located outside of San Juan and with the help of the two turbines providing 56 megawatts of power, it will turn on the lights for about 256,000 customers. That is expected to occur within two weeks, Patricoff said.

The team was able to assist APR Energy in negotiations with FEMA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Governor’s Office, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and Weston Solutions. “The government may still contract for more, depending on the availability of funding and how the officials choose to allocate aid for the island’s many emergency needs,” said Patricoff.

The Shutts team was led by partner and Chair of the International Dispute Resolution Practice Group Ed Patricoff, partners Al Smith and Dario Perez of the Miami office, partner Joe Goldstein of the Fort Lauderdale office, and attorney Curtis Wolfe of the Miami office.
