Fort Lauderdale partner Brendan Aloysius Barry recently attended the premiere of “Run Across Cuba” at the Miami Dade College Koubek Memorial Center.

The film follows the journey of Alexis Garcia, an accomplished ultra-runner who left Cuba 25 years ago. Alexis was rescued by the United States Coast Guard in the Florida Straits after 55 hours in a homemade kayak. He later went on to become a teacher for Miami-Dade Public Schools.

Over the course of 33 days, Alexis ran the entire 1,000 mile length of Cuba – from the easternmost point, Punta de Maisi, to the westernmost point, Cabo de San Antonio – running 30 miles every day. This journey was also a humanitarian effort, with Alexis handing out running shoes and socks along the way to the poor – oftentimes barefoot – children across the country.  Brendan ran two days with him near Matanzas in order to help bring attention to the plight of the people of Cuba. The trek across the country and the making of the film was not sanctioned by the Cuban government.

The film premiere was sponsored by the firm in the continued effort to bring the issues plaguing the Cuban people to light.
