Our 2022 Summer Associate Program brought seven law students to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Anne Romero joined us from Florida International University College of Law, where she is a member of FIU Law Review, Moot Court and the Florida Association of Women Lawyers. She previously interned for Judge Sanchez-Llorens of the Eleventh Circuit.
Here is what Anne had to say about her experience.
How did you decide to pursue this position?
I decided to pursue this position given my tenure with the Firm. Having been part of the Shutts family since 2009 as an assistant and paralegal, I wanted to continue with Shutts on my path toward becoming a lawyer.
What advice would you give to someone looking for a summer clerkship and how to succeed in it?
For anyone who is looking for a summer clerkship, I would recommend speaking with the career services department early in their first year. I encourage applying for clerkships with an open mind. As we navigate through law school and career development, our interests may change.
What were the three most memorable experiences throughout your time here?
I was proud to introduce myself to my colleagues as a summer associate as many of the attorneys were instrumental in my decision to pursue a law degree. For the first time in my career, I was able to attend a Federal Court hearing. Another memorable event was participating in the Summer Associate Beach Cleanup. Being a part of improving the community with the other summer associates was a top memorable experience.
Describe a typical day on the job.
Depending on the attorney I am working alongside, a typical day is spent preparing for and attending court, discussing case strategies, and drafting documents. Other times, a typical day is spent researching and reviewing corporate documents. The summer associate program has social functions including attendance at firm luncheons and lunch ‘n learns that I participated in as well.
