Our 2024 Summer Associate Program brought 13 law students from five law schools to the firm for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. The students took part in firm-sponsored social events and community service projects throughout the summer in addition to attending client meetings, depositions, court hearings and other proceedings. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few highlights from their summer at Shutts.
Carrie Williams a student at the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law, joined Shutts in the Orlando office. Carrie is a member of the Intellectual Property Society and the Sports and Entertainment Law Society.
Carrie shares her thoughts on her summer experience at Shutts.
What were the three most memorable experiences throughout your time here?
The most memorable experiences would be presenting a PowerPoint presentation to the firm’s real estate practice group about newly passed bills related to real estate development. Next, attending the summer associate retreat at the Miami office and having the opportunity to meet my peers and participate in a community service project alongside them. Finally, having the chance to assist with drafting a motion for summary judgement.
What advice would you give to someone about to start the OCI process?
I would advise someone to ensure they are well-prepared for their interviews by at least knowing why they would like to be a summer associate at that specific firm, and to be knowledgeable about the practice areas the firm offers.
What were your expectations for the summer and have they been met (or exceeded)?
As a returning summer associate, I expected to be given substantive legal assignments that I can learn from and develop my writing and researching skills. Once again, my expectations were exceeded, and I really got to strengthen my writing through various tasks I had throughout the summer.
