On October 7, 2024, Shutts & Bowen LLP, alongside the Consulate General of Israel in Miami, hosted a retrospective on the events of October 7, 2023, the latest event in the firm’s yearlong remembrance of the attack on Israel. The event, titled “October 7 – A Year’s Perspective,” featured Rona Kaufman, an Associate Professor at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, who offered a global and U.S. perspective on the year following the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Maor Elbaz-Starinksy, Consul General of Israel in Miami, offered the opening remarks during the event. Community members, attorneys and friends of Israel were joined by dignitaries and community leaders, including Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who was introduced by Miami partner and former City of Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff.

“As a member of this community and as the Mayor of this city, I can tell you that we will fight tooth and nail every single day to speak the truth and to protect people who are of Jewish origin here in the City,” said Mayor Suarez during his remarks. “We believe this to be the safest place in the world for Jews.”

This gathering marks the eighth event in Shutts & Bowen’s yearlong remembrance, with previous programs featuring interviews with Israeli security guard Din Tesler, who heroically saved lives during the Nova Music Festival attack; and Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, president of Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center. The firm has also hosted Judges Roy Altman and Robert Scola, Federal Judges for the Southern District of Florida, who discussed their educational trip to Israel.

"This series of events has been an important platform for raising awareness and fostering dialogue about the impacts of terrorism,” said Francis E. Rodriguez, Chairman of the firm’s Executive Committee. “Our firm remains committed to honoring the resilience of those affected by the tragedy."

The events have been spearheaded by Deedee Bitran who is Of Counsel to Shutts & Bowen and concurrently serves as Senior Counsel at an international nonprofit that combats antisemitism through legal action.
