In April 1916, Shutts & Bowen’s founder “Colonel” Frank Shutts hosted the first meeting of the Young Men’s Christian Association of Miami at the firm’s law library at the Burdines Building on East Flagler Street.
At the YMCA of South Florida 100th Anniversary Celebration Gala at Turnberry Isle Miami Resort on Nov. 21, Shutts & Bowen LLP was honored with the YMCA Legacy Award for its role in the formation of this leading nonprofit, committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
YMCA of South Florida First Vice Chair Jacqueline F. “Jackie” Howe, a partner in Shutts & Bowen’s Fort Lauderdale office, accepted the award with Miami Partner-in-Charge Francis “Frank” Rodriguez and Fort Lauderdale Partner-in-Charge Joseph Goldstein at the gala, joining hundreds of community and business leaders.
Bowman Brown, chair of Shutts & Bowen’s Executive Committee, narrated a video detailing the history of Shutts and the YMCA. Frank Shutts chaired the YMCA’s first fundraising committee in 1918, when the Y’s main building opened with 85 dorm rooms, a dining room, and an employment bureau. “Colonel” Shutts was also the organization’s treasurer for many years, and Shutts & Bowen’s partners have continued to serve in leadership roles for generations since.
“The instrumental work Frank Shutts did in launching the YMCA 100 years ago continues today with a new generation of leadership, and we are thankful to be a partner with the YMCA in making South Florida a better place,” Mr. Brown said.
