Attorneys from Shutts & Bowen’s Fort Lauderdale office participated with more than 70 local businesses to share potential careers with students at Dillard Elementary School’s 6th Annual Career City. Students were encouraged to ask questions about potential future careers and learn about specific professions directly from industry leaders in Broward County.
Shutts has participated in this learning experience every year since its inception, motivating the community’s youth to work hard toward academic achievement and professional success in their lives. The students, many of whom are growing up in one of the most impoverished regions in South Florida, experienced firsthand what it felt like to take a walk through a safe and inviting city that had been created just for them. Through the interactive city they learned about a wide variety of industries and professions in a fun, comfortable environment.
According to the organizers, 98% of Dillard Elementary students walk to school, are from single-parent homes and get their food intake while they are attending school. Most of the students have never traveled outside a five-mile radius of their neighborhood and many have never walked into a grocery store, an office supply store, a bank, a flower shop, or even a restaurant.
The students had the opportunity to engage with several participating Fort Lauderdale attorneys, including Brendan Aloysius Barry, Jamie B. Wasserman, Deedee Bitran, James M. Paul and Daniel Luna. Also in attendance were Broward County Superintendent Robert Runcie, Florida State Representative Bobby DuBose, and Broward County Commissioner/Vice Mayor, Dale Holness.
When asking students what their aspirations for future careers were, the team’s favorite response was from a second grader who replied, “A pony.”
