Our 2018 Summer Clerkship Program brought five law students for an intellectually challenging and professionally gratifying experience. Nearing the end of the program, the students agreed to share a few of the highlights about their summer.
Isabella joined us from the University of Miami School of Law, where she is a Dean’s Merit Full Scholarship recipient and a member of the Hispanic Student Law Association. Isabella is also a member of the University of Miami Law Review.
Here is what Isabella had to say about her summer at Shutts.
Q1. How did you decide to pursue this position?
I came across this position through my school’s on-campus interview process. I had my initial interview with Shutts and I was then called back to interview in their Miami office. It was during the second interview that I realized that I definitely wanted to work at Shutts. The people I spoke to were not just incredibly smart and experts in their fields, but they were also kind and genuine. I was looking for a firm where I would have the opportunity to work on challenging cases in an encouraging environment. Shutts was a perfect fit.
Q2. What did you do before coming to Shutts?
Before coming to Shutts I worked for U.S. Magistrate Judge Alicia O. Valle. I also attended the University of Florida where I studied Political Science and French.
Q3. What were the three most memorable experiences throughout your time here?
It is hard to narrow down a summer’s worth of experiences down to three. However, if I had to choose, I’d say (1) getting to know my co-summer associate and having the opportunity to work together; (2) drafting jury instructions for an upcoming trial; and (3) ending the summer with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Pérez Art Museum and having a great dinner with some of the people I worked with throughout the summer.
Q4. What knowledge and/or skills will you be taking with you after completing the program?
After this summer, I can say that I have significantly improved my research and writing skills. I had the opportunity to research a wide array of legal issues and draft a variety of memoranda and motions. I also leave the summer with a greater understanding of how a law firm works. I now understand the work that goes into each transaction, hearing, or client meeting.
